Sixties City Star Trek - The Original Series

Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock
"Space . . . the final frontier . . . These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . . .   its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds,
to seek out new life and new civilisations . . . to boldly go where no man has gone before"

These were the words that launched the 'Star Trek' television series. Originally shown on American NBC TV, it was an innovative science fiction series, created by Gene Roddenberry, chronicling the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise and its crew.
The time is the 23rd century, and in the 200 years following its survival of the 21st century Eugenics Wars, Earth has succeeded in virtually eliminating crime, poverty and many life-threatening diseases, largely due to the invention of the molecular transporter and the matter replicator. Interstellar travel and the exploration of the galaxy have become possible through the use of faster-than-light warp drive technology and contact has been made with many intelligent species, the first of which were Spock's race, the Vulcans. Over a hundred planets occupying the nearer systems of the explored galaxy, including Earth, have formed a friendly alliance called the United Federation of Planets.

Starfleet, the exploratory and military arm of the Federation, maintains a fleet of starships that are responsible for scientific exploration and the maintenance of the most distant outposts of the known galaxy. The starships are also the key to the defence of the Federation and patrol the boundaries along the Neutral Zones between the Federation and the more warlike, aggressive races of the Romulan and Klingon empires. These vessels are crewed by both male and female members, chosen from all the worlds of the Federation, who are given equal opportunity to undergo the rigorous training applied by the Starfleet Academy. Only the very best are assigned to starship duty and the cream of these, about 430 personnel, serve aboard the flagship of the fleet, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, on a five-year exploratory mission under the command of the legendary Captain James T. Kirk.

The 1964 pilot 'The Cage, starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike and was rejected by NBC as being 'too cerebral'. However, the potential of the show prompted a hitherto unheard-of second pilot. In 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', William Shatner, as Captain James T. Kirk, replaced Jeffrey Hunter. It also starred Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, who was the only 'character' to survive from the original pilot, and Majel Barret who played 'Number One' in the pilot and Nurse Christine Chapel in subsequent episodes.

Reaction to this second, more action-filled pilot was good and the first series premiered on NBC on Thursday September 8th 1966 in the 8:30pm - 9:30pm timeslot with the 'The Man Trap' episode. Critical response was varied and its ratings were lower than had been hoped. Season two saw DeForest Kelley joining the series' regular starring cast and it was moved to the 8:30 Friday evening slot. Continued decline in ratings prompted NBC to try to axe the show at the end of season 2, but a massive letter writing campaign by fans of the show rescued it from cancellation. A third season of episodes was produced, but ratings continued to decline, not helped by the quality of the third season storylines and a 10:00 Friday night time slot. Despite further campaigning the series was eventually finally cancelled after the last episode of the third season - 'Turnabout Intruder' - which was shown on June 3rd 1969.
